今週１週間は、これまでにＮＨＫワールドで放送されたニュースの中から、さまざまな分野の「テクノロジー」に関連したニュースを取り上げます。
英語タイトルのNEW IN-GROUND BASE STATION FOR 5Gは「５Ｇ用の新たな地中基地局」です。
携帯電話の基地局を置くスペースが足りなくなっていることから、ＮＴＴドコモは地面に穴を掘って設置する「マンホール型」の基地局を５Ｇ（第５世代の通信方式）用に開発しました。
今回のニュースで学んだ次世代通信に関する表現を使って、英語で発信してみましょう。

Major Japanese mobile phone carrier NTT Docomo has developed a new in-ground base station for 5G wireless technology. The new internet of things system requires more base stations than current 4G technology.
Burying equipment in the ground helps to overcome above-ground space restrictions. The base station uses a water-proof antenna placed into a 70-centimeter deep hole. It's covered with reinforced plastic that allows radio waves to pass through. In accordance with communications ministry guidelines, the intensity and direction of the radio waves will be adjusted to prevent them from affecting passers-by.
One problem with 5G deployment is that the available space for antennas is becoming increasingly limited on towers and the rooftops of buildings. NTT Docomo plans to start putting the new base stations into practical use next March.

解　説

carrierは、carry「運ぶ」＋-erから成る単語で、「運ぶ人やもの、輸送業者」ですが、ここでは「通信（回線）事業者」のことです。
in-groundは「地面を掘って作った、地中の、地下の」、base stationは「基地局」で、in-ground base stationは「地面を掘って設置した基地局」です。
5GのGは、generationの頭文字です。5Gは5th generation wireless system「第５世代移動通信システム」で、次世代の超高速で大容量の通信技術です。
wirelessは「無線（の）」という意味です。

センテンス 2

The new internet of things system requires more base stations than current 4G technology.

新たなＩｏＴ（モノのインターネット）システムでは、現行の４Ｇ技術よりも多くの基地局を必要とします。

解　説

internet of things「モノのインターネット」は多種多様な身の回りの家電や機器をインターネットに接続して監視や制御などを行うことで、たびたびIoTと略されます。
currentは「現在の、現行の」です。
4Gは、現行の4th generation wireless system「第４世代移動通信システム」です。

センテンス 3

Burying equipment in the ground helps to overcome above-ground space restrictions.

地中に設備を埋めることで、地上空間の制約を克服するのに役立ちます。

解　説

buryは「埋める」という意味です。
equipmentは「設備、装置、機器」です。
overcomeは、困難な状況や問題を「克服する」です。
restrictionは「制限、制約、限定、束縛」で、動詞形はrestrict「制限する、限定する」と言います。

センテンス 4

The base station uses a water-proof antenna placed into a 70-centimeter deep hole.

基地局では、７０センチの深さの穴に設置された防水アンテナを使用します。

解　説

water-proofは「防水の」で、water-proof antennaは「防水（仕様）のアンテナ」です。
この文は、a water-proof antenna (that is) placed into a 70-centimeter deep holeと補うと分かりやすくなります。

センテンス 5

It's covered with reinforced plastic that allows radio waves to pass through.

基地局は、電波を通すことができる強化プラスチックで覆われています。

解　説

冒頭のitは、基地局を指しています。
reinforcedは「強化された」状態で、reinforced plasticは「強化プラスチック」です。
allowは「許可する」で、allow A to ...は「Ａが～するのを許す、Ａが～できるようになる」という表現です。
radio waveは「電波」です。
pass throughは「通り抜ける、通過する」という句動詞です。
ＮＴＴドコモが開発したのは、携帯電話の電波をつなぐ基地局を地下に設置する「マンホール型」です。深さ７０センチほどの穴に防水仕様のアンテナなどを収め、電波を通す強化プラスチックのふたをする構造です。

総務省の指針に従って、電波の強さや向きは通行人に影響しないように調整されることになっています。

解　説

in accordance with ...は「～に従って」という表現です。
communicationsは「通信」ですが、communications ministryは「総務省」を指しています。正式な英語名称は、the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communicationsです。
guidelineは「指針、ガイドライン」です。
intensityは「強度」です。
adjustは「調整する」で、名詞形はadjustment「調整」と言います。
prevent A from ...ingは「Ａが～するのを防ぐ、Ａに～させない」という表現です。
affectは、どちらかというと悪い「影響を与える」という意味です。
passers-byは、passer-by「通行人、通りがかりの人」の複数形です。passerbyと表記することもあります。

One problem with 5G deployment is that the available space for antennas is becoming increasingly limited on towers and the rooftops of buildings.

５Ｇの展開に伴う１つの問題は、アンテナ用に利用できる空間が（鉄）塔や建物の屋上でますます不足してきているという点です。

解　説

deploymentは、動詞deploy「配備する、展開させる、活用する」の名詞形で、「配備、展開、活用」です。
availableは、何かが「利用できる、入手できる」という意味です。
increasinglyは「ますます、いっそう」という副詞です。
limitedは「限られた、不足している」です。
rooftopは「屋上」です。

NTT Docomo plans to start putting the new base stations into practical use next March.

ＮＴＴドコモでは、新しい基地局を来年３月に実用化し始める計画です。
