英語タイトルのfaithfulは「信仰心のあつい、信心深い」という形容詞ですが、ここではthe faithful「信仰のあつい人」と理解します。英文ニュースの見出しでは冠詞が省略されるので、NAGASAKI WELCOMES (THE) PHILIPPINE FAITHFULは「長崎は信仰心のあついフィリピン人を歓迎」です。
「長崎と天草地方の潜伏キリシタン関連遺産」が、世界文化遺産へ登録されました。これによって、長崎ではどのような観光ツアーが企画されているのでしょうか。長崎とフィリピンとの歴史上の関係を英語で学習し、会話でも話題として取り上げてみましょう

As Christianity spread throughout Japan in the 17th century, the Philippines was one of the missionaries' Asian bases. During the Tokugawa shogunate, however, Christianity was banned. Many missionaries and Christians lost their lives in Nagasaki. Nevertheless, the history of those who kept with the faith is carried on in the Philippines.
By focusing on Christian ties, Matsuo wants to create a tour that will attract Filipinos. Matsuo hopes to market Nagasaki as a new pilgrimage destination. The idea of faith-based tourism is being seen as a way to deepen ties between Japan and the Philippines.

develop relations with ...は「～との関係を発展させる」です。has developedと現在完了形になっているので「現在も発展させている」というニュアンスです。
the country「その国」はフィリピンを指しています。

解 説
efforts are underway to ...は「～する試みが進行中、～する取り組みが進行中」という意味です。
the four-century-old tiesは「４世紀にわたるつながり」です。センテンス４でも述べられているように、およそ４００年前、フィリピンにはアジアにおけるカトリックの布教活動の拠点が置かれ、首都マニラからスペイン人など多くの宣教師が長崎に渡り布教活動を行いました。

解 説

解 説

missionaryは「宣教師」のことで、the missionaries' Asian basesは「宣教師のアジアの拠点」です。

解 説
shogunateは日本語の「将軍」に由来します。「将軍職、将軍政治、幕府」という意味で、during the Tokugawa shogunateは「徳川幕府の時代には」です。
ここでのbanは動詞で「禁じる、禁止する」です。

解 説

carry onには「続ける」という意味もありますが、ここでは「（歴史を）引き継ぐ」です。受身形で「（歴史が）引き継がれている」となっています。
