英語タイトルのBANK TO TEST DIGITAL CURRENCYは「銀行、デジタル通貨を試す」です。
現金を使わないキャッシュレスが広がる中、三菱ＵＦＪ銀行が、みずから開発を進めているデジタル通貨を買い物の支払いなどに広く利用してもらうための１０万人規模の実証実験を開始する方針です。
今回のニュースを通して、電子決済に関連する語彙や表現を増やしましょう。

NHK has learned that the banking unit of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group plans to carry out a large-scale trial of its own digital currency.
The bank plans to conduct the test of what they call MUFG Coin as early as next year in Japan. The trial is expected to involve around 100,000 MUFG Bank account holders who apply to take part.
The participants will install an app on their smartphones that converts their deposits into digital currency. One MUFG Coin will be worth one yen. They will be able to use the currency to make payments at places like restaurants, convenience stores, and other shops. They can also transfer the currency to other accounts.
Bank officials will check to see if the settlements are carried out smoothly and in a secure way. For the future, they're considering tie-ups with a wide range of businesses to offer services based on the currency.

解　説

learnは「（経験や指導を通して知識・技能を）習得する、習う」という意味でも使いますが、本文のように「（人から聞いて）知る」というときにも使えます。
the banking unit of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Groupとは、具体的には「三菱ＵＦＪ銀行」のことです。
large-scaleは「大規模な」です。on a large scaleなら「大規模に」を表せます。
currencyは「円」や「米ドル」や「ウォン」などの「通貨」ですが、近年はこうした旧来の通貨に加え、ここでのdigital currency「デジタル通貨」や、virtual currency「仮想通貨」、cryptocurrency「暗号通貨」など新種のcurrencyが登場しています。

同行は来年にも、日本国内で「ＭＵＦＧコイン」と呼ぶものの実験を実施する考えです。

解　説

conductは前のセンテンスのcarry outの言い換え、testはtrialの言い換えになっています。
test of MUFG Coinではなくtest of what they call MUFG Coin「彼らがＭＵＦＧコインと呼ぶもの」としているのは、現段階では一般に知れ渡って認知されている名称ではなく、一部の人たち（三菱ＵＦＪ銀行）の間での呼び名だからです。
as early as ...は、直訳すれば「～という早い時期に」ですが、日本語のニュースでよく使うフレーズ「（早ければ）～にも～する（考えです）」を英訳するときに使える表現です。

The trial is expected to involve around 100,000 MUFG Bank account holders who apply to take part.

実験は、三菱ＵＦＪ銀行で口座を持つ参加申込者およそ１０万人を参加させて行われる予定です。

解　説

be expected to ...は「～する予定になっている、～すると期待されている」です。
take partは「参加する」です。「～に」参加するというときは、take part in ...に続けます。
「銀行口座」はbank accountですが、文脈から分かれば単にaccountとも言います。
applyは「申請する、申し込む」です。「applyする人＝申請者、申込者」なら、applicantです。apply to ...の後ろに動詞を置いて「申し込んで～する、～することを申請する」を表せます。

センテンス 4

The participants will install an app on their smartphones that converts their deposits into digital currency. One MUFG Coin will be worth one yen.

参加者は、預金をデジタル通貨に変換するアプリをスマートフォンに入れることになります。１ＭＵＦＧコインが１円に相当します。

解　説

センテンス３に出てきたtake part「参加する」を言い換えるなら、participateを使うことができます。「participateする人＝参加者」が、本文のparticipantです。
appは、apply「（特定の用途に）用いる」から派生した語です。コンピューター用語のapplicationは、「特定の作業をこなすよう設計されたプログラム、ソフトウエア」を指します。特にスマートフォンなどモバイル装置向けのapplicationはappと略されます。
convert A into Bは「ＡをＢに変換する」です。この動詞は自動詞としても（つまり目的語なしで）使うことができます。This sofa converts into a bed.と言えば「このソファはベッドにもなる」です。
worthは「～の価値がある、～に相当する」という意味の形容詞です。

参加者たちは、その通貨を使ってレストラン、コンビニ、その他の店舗で支払いをすることができます。参加者たちはまた、その通貨を別の口座に移すこともできます。

解　説

make a paymentは「支払いをする、支払う」という表現です。make a down paymentと言えば「頭金を払う」、make a one-time paymentと言えば「一括で払う」です。
「送金する、振り込む」に相当する英語の１つに、本文でのtransferがあります。transferは名詞として使うこともあり、money transferなら「送金」です。

三菱ＵＦＪ銀行は、決済が円滑に、そして安全に行われるかどうかを見極めたいとしています。

解　説

check to see if ...は「～かどうかを見極める、調べる、検討する」という表現です。このままの形で覚えておくと便利です。
ここでのsettlementは「決済」という意味です。
センテンス１にも出てきたcarry outが、本文では受け身形で使われています。

センテンス 7

For the future, they're considering tie-ups with a wide range of businesses to offer services based on the currency.

将来に向けて、三菱ＵＦＪ銀行はこのデジタル通貨をベースに各種サービスを提供するための、幅広い企業との提携を検討しています。

解　説

tie-upは「提携」です。a business tie-upなら「業務提携」、a capital tie-upなら「資本提携」です。句動詞tie up with ...は「～と提携する」です。
rangeは「幅、同種のものの集まり、並び」です。a range of products「各種製品、品揃え」、a range of services「各種サービス」、a broad range of activities「幅広い活動」のように使います。
businessが複数形で使われています。数えられる名詞としてのbusinessは「業務、ビジネス」ではなく、「企業」という意味です。
based on the currencyというのは「この通貨建てで価格設定した～」ということです。yen-basedなら「円建ての」、dollar-basedなら「ドル建ての」です。
