It was a 300-million-kilometer journey, but a Japanese space agency probe has reached the asteroid Ryugu after three and a half years. It will spend the coming months collecting clues that scientists hope can tell us about the origins of life.
Scientists at Japan's space agency think that Ryugu's rocks contain water and organic matter from when the solar system began, more than four and a half billion years ago. The team expressed joy and relief.
The agency says the probe, named Hayabusa2, will do observations for over a month. It will then make multiple landings to collect rock samples. In the final landing, it will carry out a mission that has never been done before. It will fire a bullet to create a hole in the asteroid, allowing it to take samples from beneath the surface. The Hayabusa2 will start its yearlong return to Earth around December 2019.
clueは「手がかり、糸口、ヒント」で、the origins of lifeは「生命の起源」です。
a mission that has never been done before「以前にされたことのない任務」は、つまり「史上初の、かつてない任務」です。
