今週１週間は、動物にまつわるニュースをご紹介します。
英語タイトルのCHINA GIFTS JAPAN PAIR OF IBISESは「中国、日本につがいのトキを贈る」です。ibisは鳥の「トキ」です。
繁殖などのため中国から１１年ぶりに提供されることになった２羽のトキが成田空港に到着し、日本側に引き渡されたときのニュースです。
今回のニュースを通して、国際親善の場でよく使われる外交的な英語表現を学びましょう。

A pair of crested ibises has arrived in Japan as a gift from Beijing.
The two-year-old male and female arrived on Wednesday at Narita Airport, near Tokyo, aboard a flight from the central city of Xian. They were put through quarantine as soon as they were taken off the plane, and a handover ceremony was held at the airport.

"I thank China for its goodwill. I hope more crested ibises can be returned to the wild. We deeply appreciate this gesture from the Chinese authorities and people."

The deputy director of China's State Forestry Administration expressed hope that cooperation between the countries on crested ibis conservation will thrive, and the birds contribute to long-standing friendship.
The ibises were taken to a conservation facility on Sado Island in the Sea of Japan later in the day. Japan has received five crested ibises from China after the birds went extinct in Japan, but none had been gifted since 2007 due to strained relations between the nations.

２羽のトキが、中国政府からの贈り物として日本に到着しました。

解　説

a pair of ...は「一対の～、ひと組の～、ひとつがいの～」です。
鳥の「とさか、冠羽（鳥の頭の、周囲より長い羽毛）」をcrestと言い、名詞について形容詞を作る接尾辞-edが付いたcrestedは「とさかのある」という意味です。同じ作りの形容詞に、bearded「ひげのある」、warm-hearted「心の温かい」などがあります。
ibisesは、ibis「トキ」の複数形です。
ここでのBeijingは「中国政府」を指しています。ニュースの英語ではよく、国の首都名でその国の政府を指します。例えばBangkokなら「タイ政府」、Moscowなら「ロシア政府」です。
日本生まれのトキは２００３年に絶滅しましたが、佐渡市では中国から譲り受けたトキを繁殖させて、自然に放す取り組みを行っています。

センテンス 2

その２歳の雄と雌は水曜日、中国中央部の都市の西安から、飛行機に乗って東京近郊の成田空港に到着しました。

解　説

maleは「雄（男性）の」、femaleは「雌（女性）の」という形容詞の用法もありますが、ここでは「雄」「雌」という名詞です。theが付いているので、センテンス１に出てきたcrested ibises「（１つがいの）トキ」を指していることが分かります。
aboardは「～に乗って、～に搭乗して」で、すぐ後ろに飛行機、船、列車などを続けます。aboard a flightは「飛行機に乗って」で、aboard an airplaneでも同じ意味です。aboardに代えて、on boardで言い換えることもできます。Welcome on board!、またはWelcome aboard!と言えば「ご搭乗・ご乗車ありがとうございます」という乗客に向けた言葉です。会社などの組織に新たに加わった人を歓迎して、比喩的に「ようこそ！」として使う場合もあります。

センテンス 3

They were put through quarantine as soon as they were taken off the plane, and a handover ceremony was held at the airport.

トキは、飛行機から降ろされるとすぐに検疫にかけられました。そして、空港で譲渡式が執り行われました。

解　説

quarantineは「検疫」で、put ... through quarantineは「～に、検疫を受けさせる」です。なお、pass a quarantineなら「検疫を通過する」、put ... into quarantineなら「～を隔離する」、quarantine periodなら「検疫期間」です。
as soon as ...は「～するとすぐに」という表現です。
hand ... over to Aは「～をＡに引き渡す」です。この句動詞hand over が１語の名詞になったhandoverは「移譲、引き渡し、明け渡し」で、handover of powerと言えば「権限の移譲」です。

"I thank China for its goodwill. I hope more crested ibises can be returned to the wild. We deeply appreciate this gesture from the Chinese authorities and people."

「中国の善意に感謝します。もっと多くのトキを野生に戻すことができるよう願っています。中国政府当局と国民が、このように（友好の）気持ちを表明してくださったことに深く感謝いたします」

解　説

環境省の勝俣孝明政務官の引き渡し署名式での言葉を英訳したものです。
goodwillは「善意、好意」です。goodwill ambassadorなら「親善大使」、goodwill visitなら「親善訪問」です。good willと、２語で綴られる場合もあります。
the wildは「野生」です。in the wildなら「野生で」です。
gestureは「身ぶり、表示行為」です。日本語の「ジェスチャー」は「身振り」のほか、「うわべだけの誠意のない言動」という否定的な意味でも使いますが、ここでは「意向・考え・気持ちを表す行為」として使っています。
appreciateは「感謝する」です。この意味では、人そのものを目的語にはしません。例えば「私は～について彼女に感謝した」は、I appreciated her for ...ではなく、I thanked her for ...とします。

中国の国家林業草原局の副局長は、トキの保護における両国の協力が今後ますます発展し、トキが末永い友好関係に貢献してくれることを願うとして、期待を表明しました。

解　説

cooperation ... on crested ibis conservationは「トキ保護での協力」です。
contribute to ... のあとには、名詞（本文ではlongstanding friendship「末永い友好関係」）か、動名詞（動詞＋ing）を続けます。「～に貢献する」という意味です。

センテンス 6

The ibises were taken to a conservation facility on Sado Island in the Sea of Japan later in the day.

トキは、その日のうちに日本海の佐渡島にある保護施設へ移送されました。

解　説

本文のように、「島にある、島で」と言うとき、islandに付ける前置詞はon、島が位置する海域に付ける前置詞はinが一般的です。「その神社は瀬戸内海の厳島にある」と言う場合、The shrine is on Itsukushima Island in the Seto Inland Sea.のように表せます。
トキは、佐渡市にある佐渡トキ保護センターで、自然に近い環境で飼育されることになっています。

Japan has received five crested ibises from China after the birds went extinct in Japan, but none had been gifted since 2007 due to strained relations between the nations.

日本でトキが絶滅して以来、日本は中国から５羽の贈呈を受けました。しかし両国関係がぎくしゃくしたため、２００７年以降は１羽も提供されていませんでした。

解　説

go extinctは「絶滅する」という表現です。
due to ...は「～のために、～のせいで」という原因を示します。
strainedは「緊張した、緊迫した」で、strained relationsは「緊張した関係、ぎくしゃくした関係」です。
