The young woman had been cleaning around a relative's grave when she felt something blow into her left eye. She rinsed it out, but it soon began to swell.

"It was a really intense, stinging pain, and I couldn't stop tearing up."

The next day, the woman visited a hospital, where the doctor took a closer look.

"I was amazed to discover four bees there. I pulled them out one by one. Each bee was around three to four millimeters long."

All of the insects survived. Sweat bees are attracted to human perspiration and also feed off the protein in people's tears. The doctor says the woman was lucky she didn't rub her eye. That could have caused the bees to sting and blind her.

眼科医は、女性のまぶたの下で４匹の小さなハチが生きているのを見つけたと述べています。

解　説

ophthalmologistは「眼科医」です。ギリシャ語から来た単語で、ophthalmo-は「目」、-logistは「～学者、～に学に精通した人」という意味です。
eyelidは「まぶた」です。

The young woman had been cleaning around a relative's grave when she felt something blow into her left eye.

この若い女性は親族の墓の周りを掃除していた際、何かが左目の中に入ったのを感じました。

解　説

graveは「墓」です。ちなみに「墓石のある大きな墓」は、tombと言います。
被害に遭ったのは、台湾南部の高雄に住む２０代の女性でした。目の痛みを感じたため、病院で見てもらったところ、まぶたの裏からハチ４匹が見つかったということです。

女性は目を洗い流したものの、目は間もなく腫れ始めました。

解　説

rinseは「ゆすぐ、すすぐ、洗い落とす」という意味です。
swellは「腫れる」です。

「非常に強烈で、刺すような痛みで、涙があふれるのを止められませんでした」

解　説

被害に遭った女性の言葉を英訳したものです。
intenseは「強烈な」です。
stingingは「刺すような」という形容詞です。
ここでのtear upは「涙があふれる」という意味です。ほかに「引き裂く」という意味もあります。

解　説

take a closer lookは「より詳しく見る」という表現です。

「４匹のハチがそこにいるのを発見して、びっくりしました。ハチたちを１匹ずつ取り出しました。それぞれのハチは長さ３から４ミリメートルでした」

解　説

診察した医師の言葉を英訳したものです。
amazedは「びっくりした」という形容詞です。surprisedよりも強い驚きを表します。
pull outは「取り出す」という句動詞です。
one by one は「１つずつ」です。ちなみに、one-on-oneと言えば「１対１の」です。

ハチは全て生きていました。コハナバチは人間の汗に引き寄せられ、また、人の涙に含まれるたんぱく質を食べるとのことです。

解　説

sweat beeは「コハナバチ」のことです。
be attracted to ...は「～に引き寄せられる」です。
perspirationは「汗」で、sweatよりも上品な言い方です。
feed off ...は「～を食べる」という意味です。
proteinは「たんぱく質」です。

The doctor says the woman was lucky she didn't rub her eye. That could have caused the bees to sting and blind her.

医師は、女性が目をこすらなかったのは運が良かったと述べています。そうしていたら、ハチが刺して失明させていたかもしれないとのことです。

解　説

luckyは「運が良かった」です。同義語に、fortunateがあります。
rubは「こする」です。
causeは「引き起こす」です。
stingは「刺す」です。
ここでのblindは「失明させる」という動詞です。「目の不自由な、目の見えない」という形容詞の用法もあります。
