An international team of researchers say that fossils from a cave in the Philippines are from a previously unknown species related to humans. They say the teeth have characteristics that have never been seen in human species and will provide important clues to evolution.
The researchers announced their findings in the science journal Nature on Wednesday.
They found the teeth, toe bone, and upper leg bone over the span of eight years in a cave in the northern Philippines. Their analysis found the species was shorter than humans and went extinct about 50,000 years ago.
They also found the toe bone was curved, showing that the species frequently climbed trees. It's similar to a different early human species from Africa. But the shape of their teeth differed from any other human species ever discovered.
The researchers have named the species Homo luzonensis, which means the people of Luzon, the island the bones were discovered on.
