The team was led by Takeshi Ito, a professor of engineering at Kansai University. The group studied cicadas. It was known that the wings of some species have antibacterial properties, but the precise mechanism was a mystery.
The researchers took a closer look at the wings and discovered microscopic protrusions in neat rows. They then created a surface that mimics the wings. They applied the dangerous bacteria E. coli. Within 20 minutes, the cells had broken down and died.
