英語タイトルのJAPANESE STARTUP SYNTHESIZES SPIDER SILKは「日本の新興企業がクモの糸を合成」です。
山形県のベンチャー企業が、軽いうえに強く、衝撃も吸収するクモの糸を参考にした新繊維の開発に成功し、ことし中の製品化を目指しています。

解　説

冒頭のtheyは、前のセンテンスに登場したspiders' webs「クモの巣」、つまりクモの巣を作るクモの糸を指しています。
数字＋timesで「～（数字）倍」を表せます。
for the same weightは「同じ重さ当たりで」という意味です。
