Before the announcement, China said it would raise tariffs on 60 billion dollars of U.S. goods to as high as 25 percent starting June 1.
Beijing said it's ready to take on the challenge.

"The U.S. side should not misjudge the situation and not underestimate China's determination to safeguard its interests. We don't want a trade war. But without doubt, we are not scared. China will confront the U.S. if it steps up pressure on us."
