U.S. President Donald Trump has signed into law legislation to support human rights and democracy in Hong Kong.
The bill requires the U.S. State Department to annually review whether Hong Kong's degree of autonomy under China's "one country, two systems" principle remains high enough for favorable U.S. trading terms.
The legislation would also impose sanctions on Chinese officials involved in human rights abuses. Trump signed a second bill banning export of tear gas, rubber bullets, and other crowd-control munitions to Hong Kong police.
In his statement, Trump says that he signed the bills "out of respect for President Xi, China, and the people of Hong Kong." He added that the bills are being enacted "in the hope that leaders and representatives of China and Hong Kong will be able to amicably settle their differences."
The U.S. Senate and House of Representatives have both endorsed the bills. Republican and Democratic senators together issued a statement welcoming Trump's decision.
