英語タイトルのconvictedは「有罪判決を受けた」、fraudは「詐欺」という意味で、FORMER SCHOOL OPERATOR CONVICTED OF FRAUDは「前学校経営者が詐欺で有罪」です。
今回は、森友学園の前理事長とその妻が有罪判決を受けたというニュースです。２０１７年に大きな話題となった事件ですが、なぜ話題になったのでしょうか。被告はどのように主張しているでしょうか。こうした点に注意して、国有地売却問題に端を発した詐欺事件について英語で学習してみましょう。

The former president of Moritomo Gakuen, Yasunori Kagoike, was sentenced to five years in prison on Wednesday. His wife Junko was given a three-year sentence, suspended for five years.
The fraud charges relate to illegally seeking subsidies for the construction of a new school on state land they had already bought for millions of dollars below its market value.
The scandal made national headlines in 2017．That's because Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's wife, Akie, was slated to become an honorary principal at the school, sparking allegations of favoritism.
Kagoike described his detention as politically motivated. He says he and his wife were arrested to turn public attention away from the prime minister.

operatorは「経営者、運営者」という意味ですが、次のセンテンスに名前が出てくる籠池被告は、森友学園の理事長でした。
find ... guiltyは「～を有罪判決とする」という表現で、受け身の形になっているので、... have been found guiltyは「～は有罪判決となった」です。
defraudは「詐欺行為をする、だまし取る」という動詞です。
the governmentは「政府」ではなく、国や大阪府、大阪市などの「行政」のことです。籠池夫妻は総額１億７,０００万円余りをだまし取ったとして詐欺などの罪に問われました。

解　説

ここでのpresidentは「理事長」です。
ここでのsentenceは動詞で「判決を下す」という意味で、be sentenced to ...は「～の判決を下される」です。
five years in prisonは「懲役５年」です。

妻の諄子被告には懲役３年、執行猶予５年の判決でした。

解　説

ここでのsentenceは名詞で「判決、刑罰」という意味で、a three-year sentenceは「懲役３年」です。
suspended for five years「５年間執行を停止される」とは、つまり「執行猶予５年」です。

この詐欺などの罪は、籠池夫妻が市場価格よりも数百万ドル低い価格ですでに購入していた国有地に新たな学校を建設する際の補助金を不正に得ようとしたことに関係しています。

解　説

ここでのchargeは「罪、容疑」という意味で、複数形になっていることからthe fraud chargesは「詐欺などの罪」です。

subsidy for ...は「～に対する補助金」です。

解　説

headlineは「見出し、トップ記事」のことで、make national headlinesは「全国的に大きく報道される」という意味です。
２０１７年に籠池被告は国会の証人喚問で、安倍総理大臣からだという寄付金１００万円を昭恵夫人から受け取ったと述べました。
